I used to be a Diet Coke drinker, switched to WalMart artificially sweetened soda water (no more caffeine!) and have now graduated to WalMart seltzer water (no sodium, no artificial sweeteners!)

I'd appreciate any info to the following...What is it in carbonated water that depletes the body's phosphorus?? Is it only those containing sodium that have this effect??

Thanks in advance for your replies.

Carbonated beverages are actually pretty controversial. If you ask around, you'll get a few different thoughts.

There have been quite a few tests and experts seem to find that people who drink lots of carbonated beverages don't seem to have enough calcium.

Some say this is because people are drinking soda instead of milk. Others say that it's the excess phosphorus in carbonated beverages that eats away at the calcium.

To my knowledge, sodium isn't really part of the equation.

Anyway, it's one of those make-up-your-own mind sort of deals. Frankly, a 12-oz glass of bubbly water a day, in my opinion, isn't going to harm you. Just keep an eye on your calcium.

Hi,

What about the "new" flavored waters (I think I have seen them by Dannon and maybe Gatorade?)which don't have any artificial sweetners, carbonation, calories, carbs, etc...? I don't kno exactly what makes them flavored, but I was hoping I could drink them instead of plain water.

Advice is appreciated (before I plunk down the outrageous cost for those speciality waters).

Thanks
Laura

Laura -

I don't really see the point. Talking about Gatorade's Propel water, it's water with sucrose syrup and vitamins injected into it. Like you said, it's expensive and it has artifical junk in it. Why not just drink water and eat fruit -- both of which are ultimately better for you and cheaper.

If you want to drink it, I don't think it's bad for you, but I do think it's silly.

Hi,

Thanks for the quick response. The stuff I saw in the store wasn't sweetened (I did check to make sure it was real and fake sugar free), it just had some fruit essence in it (I guess like flavored seltzers). I was hoping it would help me switch from seltzer (which I love) to water (which always tastes flat to me).

if your advice would change based on the no sugar thing, let me know.

Thanks again.

Laura - I'd have to see the actual product or the ingredients to make a call.
