My usual weekend intake of alcohol includes Whiskey, Beer, Vodka/Cranberry.... Any recommendations on levels of intake that would not seriously affect the effects of the program?

Well, when you're on the program, it's good idea to drink as little as possible. If you can go cold turkey for a while, that would be the best. But, we're not monks here, so keep it down to 1 or 2 drinks a day and you'll be alright. If you have 3 on a Friday night, you probably won't explode or anything.
That said, if the program isn't working for you, don't bother asking why, I'm pretty sure you'll know my advice. |

Ok, for those people out there that might go out and relax with a drink on a friday night, not me of course, what would be better, drinking one or two beers or a shot or two of tequilla?

Steve and I were just discussing that the other day. There's lots of different ways of looking at it.
The worst thing you can drink are fruity cocktails. They are filled with sugar -- usually refined sugar and the alcohol only helps turn that sugar to fat. The two best things to drink, in my opinion, are wine and beer. I don't really need to explain red wine, because I'm sure you all know about the "French Paradox" (if you're reading this from Capitol Hill, that's the "Freedom Paradox.") White wine is similar, although not quite as good. Beer, which finishes third, also has a lot going for it. It's the least amount of alcohol for the liquid, so you take longer to drink it and you get more water (there's more water in a beer -- even English beer -- than in your average soda pop). Also, you get protein, vitamins, minerals and, thanks to the malted barley, a little bit of fiber. It also contains some carbs (although not as much as the lite-carb beer makers would have you believe. It also contains the anti-oxidants similar to the ones found in wine, tea and several fruits and vegetables, all of which have been known to protect against cardiovascular disease. So it would appear the "French Paradox” applies to ale drinkers as well. Your average 12 oz. beer is about 160 calories. Light beer is about 100 calories. Mind you, it's still booze, so I'm not telling y'all to start boozing it up. |
