I know that tofu and cheese are good sources of protein for vegetarians, but they are also pretty high in fat. Any advice on better options? The protien-supplement bars I have found are loaded with carbs (which I need to cut down on already) so I am not sure how to get enough protein in my diet.

As a vegetarian, it's very important that you make sure and get some protein with each meal, since you don't have the BIG sources available. This can work in your favor, since small amounts are more readily absorbed. If you do milk products it's easy, with eggs, egg whites, and low and non fat milk and cottage cheese to choose from--wait, you said cheese... cool. Okay, there you go. Low or no fat milk products and things like egg whites (or I'll do one whole egg with 3 whites).
Tofu is sorta high in fat but it's good fat, so it's okay. You want to avoid saturated fats, so cheese is something you should cut down on. Other things that are handy are protein shakes. Usually this will give you a little shot of protein whenever needed. You can get rice protein at health stores. Whey protein is probably the best (definitly for many things) but rice protein adds variety. There are also "fake" meat products, made from things like wheat gluten. While not the very best protein source, these are a good option too, if for nothing else than food variety. |
