I'm an avid beachbody fan, owning Slim Series, Si6 and P90. I am dying to have p90x, however I have one concern. I'm vegan and thus I don't eat any animal products or byproducts. I haven't been one for long but would like to stick with it. Is there room for veganism in the meal plan???
Thanks, Sam |

Sam,
There is room for vegetarianism in any meal plan. Of course, it's harder and takes a more active role on your part, but you are used to that I'm sure. The only real issue with being vegan is protein and this diet will test this. But you must keep in mind that the diet plans are not set in stone. They are suggestions with individual variables. As a vegan, you probably (or should) use a lot of soy and rice protein, which is ample as a protein source. You should consider an amino acid supplement as your diet will assure that you will miss some aminos that help greatly with recovery. You will also want to buy you own supplements, as ours are not vegan friendly. But the P90X supps, while top-of-the-line, are still just mainly food substitutes and vitamins. So you can follow the protocol and substitute vegan-freindly options. |

Protein Powder vs. BB Meal Replacement Shake question
Hi -- I thought I'd jump in here and ask a question of the Fitness Advisor. I have the Beachbody meal replacement shakes, which seem to have a lot of protein in them. I'm doing P90X right now. Can I substitute the meal replacement shake for the protein shake, as listed in the P90X nutrition guide for certain breakfasts? Thanks for your answer. |

Sam,
I'm a longtime vegan, so maybe I can help. There are (as far as I know) three sources of complete proteins (which means they supply all the amino acids necessary to sustain human life) in a vegan diet: soy, hemp seeds (the eatin' kind!) and amaranth (a grain), all other plant proteins need to be combined to make a complete protein (but this is fairly easy, as many of the combos--like rice and beans--are often used together. You don't even have to eat the complimentary proteins in the same meal, but rather within about 24 hours. Some good high-protein snacks include soy jerkey. Instead of the "recovery drink," I take a soy beverage that has added vitamins and minerals and that's called "Power Dream." The protein-to-carb ratio is close to what they advertise for the recovery drink (and it comes in chocolate, vanilla, mango or some coffee flavor). You might check at www.veganessentials.com , www.dixiediner.com or www.veganstore.com for some protein alternatives. |
