Just received our set of power 90. we were teased by the thin thighs, and the great stretch, buns and arms. I was reading in the booklet that you can do some supplemental cardio if you feel you are not getting enough? Do we need to do these tapes as well. I have mentioned them to a friend and figured they would tease her and then she'll see how well we are doing. After working out for years and corrently still doing some of the firm tapes, do you need the "body solutions" like night supplements? My husband and I are looking for those 10-15 extra to get off and tone, but does everyone do the supplements too? I notice white wine is in tier 3, what about red wine?Finishing up the booklet tomorrow and ready to roll Sunday.Afraid to do the measurements and photo but will try!

Welcome to the P90 family!

In my opinion you don't have to do any additional tapes. I ran 3 miles every day before I started Power 90. At first I was quite reluctant to put all my exercise efforts into P90, because I thought I wouldn't be getting enough exercise. The fitness advisor here suggested I stick with the program and put runs in as supplemental exercise. I didn't need to do the running...I got better results sticking to P90 exclusively. I think the Sculpting is the real key because once you start toning your body, your metabolism just speeds up. I DID, however, graduate to Cardio 3/4 in week 2. I think the 1/2 is for those who have not exercised much at all.
I plan on continuing P90 past the 90 days and maybe walking or doing another cardio for variation occasionally.

Make sure you take that picture. I'm kicking myself for not taking a picture, because I am very happy with my progress. I wish I could compare day one and day 72 (which is where I am now)

Good luck with the program, it is AWESOME!
Deb.. smile

Wine Lover,

You shouldn't need to do the extra tapes. They might help but chances are better that they would hurt you, at least at first. It would be better to use your extra energy to turn up the volume on the P90 workouts (intensity over time). This is especially true when it comes to the Sculpt tapes. You want these workouts to be hard for you. Then you will need the time off to rest and grow strong.

If you feel that you need more calorie burning add some low-moderate intensity cardio. Do this on an empty stomach with a duration of anything longer than 20 minutes. This will help your body learn to mobilize its fat stores (use fat as energy), which is a process that your body can get better at.

Wine... hmmm, I love wine! Technically, all alcohol is bad for performance-oriented fitness. It is more or less the same as eating sugar, since this is how you process it. This raises insulin levels, which can lower your BMR, blah, blah, blah...

Therefore, like sugar, it should be consumed in moderation. However, many studies show that one glass of alcohol a day is actually good for you and can reduce cholesterol levels and the risk of heart disease.

Now, red wine. There are many red wine theories out there that talk about how much better it is for you than any other alcohol. Most have to do with something called phytochemicals. My experience has convinced me that this is true (or somewhat true, anyway). Alcohol is still alcohol and calories are calories. Therefore, if you consume too much it will be a problem. When trying to lose weight you also run into the nutritional aspect of this as well. Wine is not exactly loaded with nutrients so if it is a substitute for something your diet is lacking than you can wind up deficient. But, back to my test...

After a climbing trip to France I noticed that many outstanding (and very thin) French climbers seemed to drink a lot of red wine. They also ate a lot of butter, croissants, etc. I was eating a low-fat healthful diet and trying to drink as little as possible and these guys were climbing circles around me. Back in the states me and a climbing partner embarked on our own "French diet". We ate anything we wanted, even excess fat (croissants, brie, pate, etc). The only alcohol that was allowed was red wine. After 3 months we both gained very little weight, and our diets had changed tremendously.

Now, what does this mean? I can't really say for sure because our diets were random and we were exercising a ton. One of my observations is that I may have been deficient in something on my low-fat diet so that eating excess fat probably wasn't as bad as it could be. But overall I will say this: I think something in red wine makes it the alcohol of choice for fitness. It can be abused, for sure, but in moderation I have never seen any performance drop due to its consumption. I have done similar studies with both beer and hard alcohol and they have seemed to be more difficult to deal with (I have lost more fitness in shorter periods). My layman's opinion on this (I have done no science with this subject) is that beer has too many calories and hard alcohol has a harder effect on the body's metabolic rate.

So drink and be merry, just not too merry!

Hey Leah,

Sorry I haven't checked here for a while and I didn't see that you'd asked me a question.

From my experience, the best thing about P90 is the Sculpting. It was definately what was lacking in my exercise program. Unfortunatly I didn't take my measurements before I started, or a picture. Make sure you do that, because you will be really amazed. I haven't lost a lot of weight...Maybe 5 lbs??? But I've really toned up. My arms were not too bad when I started, but they are very hard and toned now. What I'm really happy with is my abs and legs. I'm not sure why this workout works so well, but somehow the combination of the moves produce results. The "before" and "after" pictures of the people in the test group are typical of how your body shapes up.
I'm very happy with the results.
Have a great time with the workout,
Deb (day 78

I guess we just want results instantly frown
So far so good but I think when my treadmill gets back up and running I'll start back at adding that in also. I have the Great Body videos and have to say that they also give you a great PUMP too!! Boy was I sore the day after!
