In the power form, there is whey protein, soy protein... I've even come across rice protein. A few heaping tablespoons added to a drink supplies about 20 grams. I've also seen various protein drinks put out by the Metrex company and other companies. Adkins makes one also. Some of these drinks have 30 to 40 grams. And what about all these protein candy bars? Do you recommend them? There's Pure Protein, Myoplex, etc. etc.

hey george-
I am willing to be wrong... I am an anatomy student. I have pondered over protein many times and the information I have discovered is this: 1.) your body can only use so much protein at a time. Some of theses products contain WAY more than you could possibly use.
2.) these products are not the cleanest foods. Why not save your money, and eat frequent, resonable ammounts of un adulterated protein coming from animals and plants

Well gee, Gee, you might be right. We could probably get all the protein we need from regular food. That is, if we ate properly. But a lot of Americans don't have a very good diet. And people who are doing the body building / physical fitness thing might need that extra boost, to rebuild all those muscles.

I am also interested in knowing more about the protein bars. I agree with Gee, in an ideal world it is better to eat natural foods. But I need some easy and quick alternatives as I am on the go a lot and need to make sure I am getting my adequate supply of calories. By trying to keep my meals from the top two tier groups, I find I am not getting enough calories and am afraid of hitting a plateau in my weight loss.
I heard the luna bars are non-dairy and a good protein source. I have read debates on these boards about the value of the zone bars. But I would like to get some accurate advice on this topic.

When it comes to bars, the best way to do it by trial and error and checking the ingredients and nutritional contents. My opinion is that I like some and not others and the best way is to try them. It's not like protein powder because you can buy them individually. Probably start with the ones that taste good and go down the line. But I've found some I think taste good that don't seem to do the trick, while others not so good give me the energy I need. I'm not going to share my opinions because I think it's somewhat personal, plus bars change. I didn't like the old MetRX bars because they messed with my digestive system and tasted like chalk. The new ones are much better (for me). Good companies are not afraid to admit mistakes and alter their products. Clif bars are pretty natual, which makes them good for a lot of people. Balance and Zone bars taste really good. You just need to try them.

About protein powders, they are often better than food because you take out superfluous ingredients, like saturated fats, that we don't want. Food source proteins need to be combined with other foods in pretty much the same way supplemental one's do. Each type of protein has a unique makeup. Some are more effective than others. And some are better for certain activity than others. The highest performance diet that you can achieve will be a combination of proteins from food sources and supplemental protein, and almost all world class athletes follow this protocol.

I've been experimenting on my own with various types of protein powders. I bought a container of soy, one of whey, and one of rice protein. I like to mix them together in a glass of fruit juice. And I'll add other healthy ingredients such as creatine, lecithin, wheat germ, banana, etc. Tastes good. I prefer the unflavored protein powders. Too many brands add fructose or artificial sweeteners, no doubt to make the drink more palatable and popular. But I find that the fruit juice makes it all taste fine. I'm veering away somewhat from the soy protein powder because I think I might be allergic to it. Sometimes my eyes will get itchy or puffy after I take it. (I once had a bad reaction with a 'soy silk' drink.) I assume all of these different types of protein powders are equally good.

Regarding the candy bars, I eat them much less frequently. 'Pure Protein' is probably my favorite of all the various brands. It seems like a new company comes out every month with a new brand of protein bar. It's obviously very big business right now. I guess enough people are finding that these bars are beneficial enough to spend $3 on.

Different proteins have different chemical makeups that make them better for different physical functions. For example, whey protein is very good for muscle resysnthesis and soy protein is good for muscular endurance. It is not all that uncommon to be allergic to soy, so that could be the case.

Between 20-30% always. In most cases, closer to 30% is better.
